Dinko Gruhonic - Serbia

Human rights defenders in Serbia believe that right wing Serbian nationalists have not given up their territorial and political ambitions and that their next target will be the multi ethnic areas such as Vojvodina, traditionally one of the most progressive and tolerant areas of Serbia.

Further Information

Dinko Gruhonic is head of the Vojvodina branch of the independent news agency BETA and chairman of the Independent Journalists’ Association of Vojvodina. He regularly reports on human rights issues and the activities of neo-nazi groups.

In 2005 a debate at the university to mark the anniversary of Kristalnacht was broken up by a group of neo-fascists. Dinko’s newspaper reports and subsequent evidence resulted in the gang leader, Goran Davidovic being sentenced to one year in jail. Since then Dinko has been targeted by right wing groups and received threats to kill him, his wife and children.

Davidovic denounced the journalist as an enemy of the Serbian people and as a traitor in an autobiography published in December 2006.
