In 2008 Front Line made 152 grants totaling €301,253 to individual human rights defenders and organizations in 42 countries throughout the world. Unfortunately threats against human rights defenders are increasing and the need to provide support is growing.

Our 2009 Small Grants budget is €300,000. We need your help to continue to support at-risk human rights defenders through this crucial progamme.

100% of your donation to The Protection Fund for Human Rights Defenders at Risk will go directly to protect human rights defenders who routinely face death threats, illegal prosecution, imprisonment, violence, and defamation as a result of their non-violent human rights work on behalf of others. "The grant helped me get protection and you can’t belief it. It actually strengthened my desire, devotion and commitment to fighting for human rights and democratic change.....I feel protected where I am but also feel protected by virtue of my association with Front Line, knowing that in the event that my life is under threat over the land project then I have some group to help me out. Front Line is frontlife". Kenyan human rights defender Ken Wafula.

An example of how Front Line helps to protect Human Rights Defenders:

Kenya - Western Kenya Human Rights Watch

Western Kenya Human Rights Watch (WKHRW) is a small rural based organisation who applied for a grant for office security from Front Line in April 2008. Their office had been broken into twice, in 2004 and 2007 and during these raids, the organization lost all of their office equipment that had been acquired through donations. WKHRW received €1196 with which they Reinforced their doors, front middle and rear and the windows with double steal grills and partitioned two offices, reinforcing their security. The new security measures help to protect WKHRW employees and the general public whom they serve.
