Conditions Improve for Mutabar Tadjibaeva

Front Line is gravely concerned following reports of the deterioration in the health of Mutabar Tadjibaeva, human rights defender and Chairperson of the human rights organisation “Plammenoe Serdtse” (Fiery Hearts Club) in Ferghana city. Mutabar Tajibaeva was arrested on 7 October 2005 and subsequently sentenced to 8 years in prison on 6 March 2006. She is currently being detained at Tashkent Prison. Front Line has previously expressed grave concern at the continued detention of Mutabar Tadjibaeva and her deteriorating health, most recently on 28 March 2007.  Read More

Uzbekistan: Psychiatric hospitalisation of human rights defender Vadim Olsevich

Front Line is gravely concerned following reports of the psychiatric hospitalisation of human rights defender Vadim Olsevich on 12 June 2008. Vadim Olsevich has been involved in the monitoring of conditions in hospitals for patients suffering from tuberculosis in Tashkent and the surrounding areas. Vadim Olsevich reported on his findings to members of the Alliance of Human Rights Defenders of Uzbekistan (PAU), a non-governmental organisation of which he is a member.  Read More

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the delay in proceedings in the case of human rights defender and lawyer, Mr P. Uthayakumar. He continues to be deprived of his required prescription medication for diabetes and is suffering from a number of diabetes related illnesses. Mr P. Uthayakumar is a human rights lawyer working to defend the rights of the ethnic minority Indians and an active Legal Advisor of Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF). Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that charges have been brought against Martín Amaru Barrios Hernández, and that Reyna Ramírez has been attacked and threatened. Colombia: Death threats against NGOs from the Espacio de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras de Derechos Humanos

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that there have been death threats made against a number of non-governmental organisations, all members of the Espacio de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras de Derechos Humanos (ETTDH – Human Rights Workers' Coalition), allegedly sent by the paramilitary group, the “Águilas Negras (Black Eagles)”. Tunisia: Arbitrary detention and interrogation of human rights defenders Sihem Bensedrine and Omar Mestiri

On 18 June 2008, Sihem Bensedrine and Omar Mestiri were stopped at the Tunisian-Algerian border while on their way to an event in Algeria to promote freedom of expression in the region. They were interrogated for approximately two and a half hours before being released. No reasons were given for their interrogation. Omar Mestiri is the chief editor of the online newspaper Kalima and Sihem Bensedrine is the founder and spokesperson of the Conseil national pour les libertés en Tunisie (CNLT) (National Council for Civil Liberties in Tunisia) and the Secretary-General for the Observatoire pour la Liberté de presse, d'édition et de création en Tunisie (OLPEC) (Observatory for the Freedom of the Press, Publication, and the Arts in Tunisia). On 7 February 2008, Sihem Bensedrine was awarded the 2008 Peace Prize by the Danish Peace Foundation.  Read More
