On 25 November 2011, human rights defender Mr Abhaya Sahoo was arrested in Nua Pokhari in the Jagatsinghpur District while returning to Paradip. His application for bail was rejected and he is currently being detained in Choudwar Prison.

On 3 October 2011, the home of human rights defender Ms Kavita Srivastava in Jaipur city, Rajasthan state was raided by sixty police officers from the states of Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

India: Arrest of human rights defender Mr Akhil Gogoi at a press conference after leading a protestposted on: 2011/06/28

On 24 June 2011 human rights defender and land rights activist Mr Akhil Gogoi was arrested at Guwahati Press Club, in the northeastern state of Assam, where he was addressing a press conference. His arrest follows a protest which took place on 22 June 2011 in the state capital Dispur, during which three protestors were killed and over 50 injured as police opened fire into the crowd. Akhil Gogoi is general-secretary of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and an activist using the Right to Information (RTI) Act. KMSS works with indigenous peoples in Assam in protecting and promoting their land rights. Akhil Gogoi is also an active campaigner against the construction of mega-dams in the state of Assam.

On 7 June 2011 at approximately 12pm, human rights defender Ms Zeng Jinyan received a phone call from her landlady asking her to immediately vacate the apartment in which she is living with her three year old daughter in Yantian District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province.

On 5 January 2010, human rights defender Mr Ahongsangbam Mobi Singh(hereinafter A. Mobi Singh) was released on bail following seven nights in detention in Imphal, Manipur, on charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967.

A. Mobi Singh is the Editor of the local daily newspaper “The Sanaleibak” as well as Vice President and spokesperson of the All Manipur Working Journalist's Union (AMWJU), a state-wide union which works to defend freedom of the press and journalistic independence in the context of the ongoing conflict between various State and non-State armed groups in Manipur.

On 28 December 2010, A. Mobi Singh was contacted on his mobile phone by an individual who identified himself as a member of the Tabungba faction of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), who requested that A. Mobi Singh send three members of the AMWJU to Delhi to meet and discuss publication of their statements, at the expense of the KCP.

On 29 December 2010, A. Mobi Singh was again contacted by an individual claiming to represent the KCP asking him to collect a sum of Rs.

India: Human rights defender Dr Binayak Sen sentenced to life imprisonment posted on: 2011/01/06

On 24 December 2010, Dr Binayak Sen was sentenced to life imprisonment by Raipur Additional District and Sessions Court. Dr Binayak Sen is the General Secretary of the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) regional office in the state of Chhattisgarh, as well as the Vice-President of the PUCL at a national level.

The PUCL, which was founded in 1976, is a non-governmental, non-political organisation dedicated to the defence of civil liberties and human rights. In recent decades, Dr Binayak Sen has been involved in training people living in rural villages with regard to community health and disease prevention.

In 2004, he was awarded the Paul Harrison Award by the Christian Medical College in Vellore. Dr Binayak Sen has also campaigned to raise awareness with regard to human rights violations committed by allegedly state-sponsored Salwa Judum militias.

India: Attack on offices of human rights organisation Bachpan Bachao Andolanposted on: 2010/11/19

On 18 November 2010, the offices of the human rights organisation Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) were broken into and ransacked. During the attack valuable documentation containing confidential financial and legal information, as well as cash, computers and other office equipment was stolen from the premises. BBA is a human rights organisation working to promote the rights of the child throughout India by campaigning against child labour, child trafficking and child servitude. In particular, BBA has been instrumental in reuniting children who were victims of forced child labour with their families.

Further Information

In the early hours of 18 November 2010, the attackers gained entry to the offices of BBA using force and ransacked furniture and filing cabinets, as well as vandalising other office equipment. During the attack sensitive legal and financial documentation was stolen. In the past the offices of BBA have been vandalised on numerous occasions.

Human rights defenders Mr Gnana Diraviam, Mr Anandan, Ms Bharathi Pillai, Ms Niharga Priya and Ms Sudha have been arrested and remanded in judicial custody since 15 August 2010.

India: Kashmir - Preventive detention of human rights defenders and lawyers Mian Abdul Qayoom and Ghulam Nabi Shaheenposted on: 2010/07/23

Human rights defenders, Mr Mian Abdul Qayoom, President of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Srinagar, and Mr Ghulam Nabi Shaheen, General Secretary of the Bar Association, were arrested under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act of 1978 (PSA) on 7 July and 18 July 2010 respectively.

India: Gujarat - Killing of human rights defender Amit Jethwaposted on: 2010/07/22

Front Line is deeply saddened by news of the killing of human rights defender Mr Amit Jethwa in Gujarat on 20 July 2010. Amit Jethwa was a Public Interest Law Practitioner and Right to Information (RTI) Activist.

On 20 July 2010, Amit Jethwa was shot dead as he approached his car after leaving the Gujarat High Court building where he had been meeting with his lawyer. Witnesses in the vicinity of the shooting reported seeing Amit Jethwa being approached by two individuals on a motorcycle. After being shot the human rights defender was able to throw himself at his assailants and knock them from their motorcycle. They fled on foot, leaving behind the vehicle, the revolver and a bag. Amit Jethwa died at the scene prior to the arrival of the ambulance.

Amit Jethwa had filed several petitions in the Gujarat High Court against the forest department. On the day of the killing he had been meeting with his lawyer in relation to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that he had filed in June. The PIL concerned illegal mining in the Gir forests of Junagadh district on the Kathiawar peninsula in Western Gujarat.
