On 8 November 2011, human rights defender and lawyer Ms Najet Laabidi was subjected to a barrage of verbal abuse and threats from the relatives of those former officials currently being tried before a military court in Tunis on charges of torturing political prisoners during the rule of the former Tunisian President Ben Ali.

On the night of 16 October 2011, the offices of the Ligue Tunisienne pour la défense des Droits de l'Homme (LTDH) (Tunisian League for the Defence of Human Rights) in the Amran neighbourhood of Tunis were broken into by hitherto unknown persons.

Tunisia – Travel ban against human rights defender Mr Ali Ben Salemposted on: 2010/12/02

On 26 November 2010, human rights defender Mr Ali Ben Salem, aged 78 years, was prevented from leaving on a flight from Tunis-Carthage airport to Barcelona, where he was due to take part in a number of events related to his human rights work.

Further Information

Ali Ben Salem is a founding member of several human rights organisations in Tunisia, including the National Council for Liberties in Tunisia(CNLT) and the Association of Former Members of the Resistance (ANAR). He is also president of the Bizerte branch of the Tunisian League for Human Rights (LTDH).

On 26 November 2010, Ali Ben Salem arrived at Tunis-Carthage airport to take a flight to Barcelona, Spain. Around 8:00am, the border police prevented him from leaving the country on the pretext of legal proceedings against him, in particular libel proceedings instituted against Ali Ben Salem in June 2006, following a press release he published on behalf of the LTDH on the treatment of political prisoners in Tunisia.

Since the case was opened in 2006, it has remained at the stage of preparation for eventual judgement.

On November 26, journalist and human rights defender Mr. Taoufik Ben Brik was sentenced by the Tribunal de Grande Instance (Court of First Instance) in Tunis to six months in prison. Front Line expresses its concern at the verdict in a trial marred by several violations of the right to a fair trial.

Human rights defender Mr Omar Mestiri was arbitrarily arrested and violently beaten before being abandoned in Tunis' outskirts today, 16 November 2009. Omar Mestiri is managing editor of the web newspaper Kalima and member of the Conseil National pour les Libertés en Tunisie (CNLT).

Tunisia: Harassment and attacks on human rights lawyers, Ms Radhia Nasraoui, Mr Raouf Ayadi, and Mr Abdelwahab Maatarposted on: 2009/06/25

Human rights defenders Ms Radhia Nasraoui and Mr Raouf Ayadi were subjected to a "Zero six" full body and luggage search on their return to the country. Zero Six refers to the code used in the security database, authorising full body and luggage search and confiscation of documents every time the person leaves or returns to the country. Abdelwahab Maatar was beaten in Sfax airport for refusing to be body searched.

Front Line is concerned following reports that human rights lawyer Mr Mohamed Abbou was again prevented from leaving Tunisia on 3 March 2009. He is a member of the Conseil National pour les Libertés en Tunisie – CNLT (National Council for Liberties in Tunisia). Front Line has issued several urgent appeals concerning Mohamed Abbou, most recently on 17 December 2008 following a previous incident in which he was prevented from travelling.

Front Line is concerned following information received regarding the arrest, on 27 January 2009, of journalist Mr Dhafer Otay, coordinator of Radio Kalima, and the harassment of other human rights defenders and journalists. This morning (Friday 30 Jan), police raided the offices of Radio Kalima, cut the telephone lines and seized the radio equipment.

Front Line is concerned at the smear campaign against Ms Sihem Bensedrine, spokesperson of the Conseil national pour les libertés en Tunisie - CNLT (National Council for Liberties in Tunisia) and chief editor of the online newspaper and radio Kalima. Several newspapers have reported on accusations of opportunism and misuse of funds brought against Sihem Bensedrine by a former employee at Kalima, and depicted her and other eminent human rights defenders as 'radical activists' in apparently orchestrated smear campaign.

Tunisia: Journalist Lotfi Hidouri arrested and lawyer Mohamed Abbou prevented from travelling to Arab Free Press Forumposted on: 2008/12/18

Front Line is concerned following reports that journalist Mr Lotfi Hidouri was arrested on 10 December 2008 at Tunis' Carthage airport as he prepared to leave for Beirut to attend the Third Arab Free Press Forum. Mr Mohamed Abbou, was also prevented from leaving the country and attending the conference in Beirut after he intervened to determine the reason for Lotfi Hidouri's arrest. Lotfi Hidouri is the sub-editor of Kalima newspaper and a member of L'Observatoire pour la Liberté de Presse – OLPEC (The Observatory for the Freedom of the Press). Mohamed Abbou is a lawyer and a member of the Conseil National pour les Libertés en Tunisie – CNLT (National Council for Liberties in Tunisia).

Tunisia: Ill-treatment of human rights defender Slim Boukhdir while in detentionposted on: 2008/05/29

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the ill-treatment of human rights defender Slim Boukhdir while in detention. Slim Boukhdir was arrested on 26 November 2007 and on 18 January 2008 he was sentenced to one year's imprisonment. He is currently detained in Sfax prison, 230 kilometres south of Tunis. Slim Boukhdir is a correspondent with the London-based pan-Arab newspaper Al Quds Al Arabi and the website of the satellite news channel Al-Arabiya. He also writes for other news websites, including Tunisnews and Kantara.
