Syria: Search at the home of human rights lawyer Mrs Razan Zeitouneh and arrest of her husbandposted on: 2011/05/16

On 12 May the home of human rights lawyer Mrs Razan Zeitouneh in Damascus was searched by Syrian authorities and her husband Mr Wa'il Al-Hamada was arrested. The Syrian authorities are allegedly stepping up their threat and harassment of the prominent Syrian human rights defender and lawyer to force her to stop her human rights activism.

On 1 April 2011, human rights defender Mr 'Abd Al-Karim Dha'oon was arrested in Al-Salamia, Syria. 'Abd Al-Karim Dha'oon is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Syrian Committee for the Defence of Democratic Liberties and Human Rights. He is believed to be held incommunicado, and his whereabouts are unknown.

Between 5 and 27 March 2011, a number of human rights lawyers have been arrested and remain detained in undisclosed locations in Syria, including Messrs Hussain 'Issa and Tamer Al-Jahmani, members of the Committee for the Defence of Prisoners of Conscience in Syria, Sulayman Nahili, Nidal Al-Shaykh Hammoud and Muhammad Ibrahim 'Issa.

On 16 March 2011, numerous human rights defenders were arrested as authorities cracked down violently on a peaceful protest in Damascus. Those arrested included human rights defenders Mr Mazen Darwish, Ms Suhayr Al Atassi, Mr Naret Abdelkarim, Mr Tayeb Tezini, Ms Sereen Khouri and Mr Kamal Sheikho.

يوم السادس و العشرين من شباط/ فبراير 2011، بدأ المدافع السجين عن حقوق الإنسان السيد كمال شيخو إضراباً جافاً عن الطعام في سجن عدرا بدمشق. و كمال شيخو طالب في كلية الآداب، و مدوِّن و مدافع عن حقوق الإنسان، سبق أن عمل مع لجنة الدفاع عن الحريات الديمقراطية و حقوق الإنسان في سوريا، و أصبح لاحقاً ناشطاً مستقلاً في الدفاع عن حقوق الإنسان.

يوم السادس عشر من شباط/ فبراير 2011، بدأ كمال شيخو إضراباً مفتوحاً عن الطعام، احتجاجاً على تواصل سجنه دون إدانة. و كان قد اعتُقل يوم الثالث و العشرين من حزيران/ يونيو 2010، من قبل قوات الأمن السورية، على نقطة حدود جديدة يبوس، بينما كان يحاول السفر من سوريا إلى بيروت.

و وُجِّهت إليه في وقت لاحق اتهاماتٌ بـ "نشر معلوماتٍ زائفة من شأنها تثبيط معنويات الأمة". و كان شيخو قد نشر في حزيران/ يونيو 2010 على الموقع الإلكتروني All4Syria مقابلاتٍ أجراها مع عدد من الموقعين على إعلان دمشق، ممن كانوا مسجونين بدورهم.

و تجري محاكمته أمام محكمة دمشق الجنائية الثانية، و من المقرر أن تنعقد الجلسة التالية في محاكمته يوم السابع من آذار/ مارس 2011.

تعتقد مؤسسة الخط الأمامي أن توقيف كمال شيخو و الاتهامات الموجهة إليه إنما هي متصلةٌ بشكل مباشر بعمله المشروع و السلمي في الدفاع عن حقوق الإنسان.

Syria: Human rights defender Mr Kamal Sheikho on hunger strikeposted on: 2011/03/01

On 26 February 2011, imprisoned human rights defender Mr Kamal Sheikho began a dry hunger strike in Adra prison, Damascus. Kamal Sheikho is a literature student, blogger and human rights defender who formerly worked with the Committee for the Defence of Democratic Liberties and Human Rights in Syria, and subsequently became active in defending human rights independently.

On 16 February 2011, Kamal Sheikho had begun an open hunger strike in protest against his continued imprisonment without conviction. He was arrested on 23 June 2010 by Syrian Security forces at the Jedeidat Yabus border crossing while attempting to travel from Syria to Beirut, Lebanon.

He was subsequently charged with “spreading false information that could debilitate the morale of the nation”. In June 2010, Kamal Sheikho had published interviews with three previously imprisoned signatories of the Damascus Declaration on the website “All4Syria”.

Syria: Human rights defender Mr Radef Moustafa summoned for interrogation before disciplinary council of the Syrian Bar Associationposted on: 2011/01/10

On 19 December 2010, human rights defender Mr Radef Moustafa was summoned for a hearing before a disciplinary council within the Aleppo Branch of the Syrian Bar Association on accusations of instigation against the authorities, crimes against State security, and harming national unity.

Radef Moustafa is a human rights lawyer, director of the Kurdish Committee for Human Rights (kurdchr) and coordinator of the Syria Coalition against Capital Punishment. He has provided pro bono legal assistance to several human rights defenders charged and brought to court in Syria, including among others Mr Muhanad Alhasani, imprisoned human rights lawyer and president of the Syrian Human Rights Organization (SHRO), and winner of the 2010 Martin Ennals Award.

Syria - Human rights defender Mr Muhannad Al-Hassani assaulted while in prisonposted on: 2010/11/02

On 28 October 2010 human rights defender Mr Muhannad Al-Hassani, who is currently serving a three-year prison sentence and sharing a cell with 60 common convicted criminals, was attacked by one of the prisoners and severely beaten causing a cut in his forehead that required 10 stitches, and swelling of his right eye and cheek.

Syria: Human rights defender Mr Abdul-Hafiz Abdul Al-Rahman sentenced to one year in prisonposted on: 2010/10/06

On Wednesday 29 September 2010 human rights defender, Mr Abdul-Hafiz Abdul Al-Rahman, was sentenced to one year in prison. Abdul-Hafiz Abdul Al-Rahman is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Human Rights Organisation in Syria (MAF), an organisation which represents the Kurdish minority in Syria.

Human rights defender Mr Ali Saleh Al-Abdallah remains in detention in Syria. Ali Saleh Al-Abdallah is a writer and activist, a member of the Secretariat General of the National Council of the Damascus Declaration for National Democratic Change, and a journalist and political analyst.

Syria: Travel ban imposed on human rights lawyer Mr Radef Moustafaposted on: 2010/02/25

Human rights defender Mr Radef Moustafa was prevented from travelling to Geneva to attend the Fourth International Conference against Capital Punishment taking place from 24-26 February 2010. The security authorities did not give any reason for preventing Radef Moustafa from travelling outside Syria.

Human rights defender Mr Radef Moustafa was prevented from travelling to Cairo to attend a Front Line regional workshop on the implementation of the EU guidelines on human rights defenders, which took place on 2-3 December 2009. The Security intelligence and the State intelligence offices in Aleppo refused to grant Radef Moustafa the permission to travel.

Syria: Arrested human rights lawyer Mr Haitham al-Maleh to face national security charges posted on: 2009/10/23

Arrested human rights defender Mr Haitham Al-Maleh has had a court hearing scheduled for 25 October, at which he will face national security charges which are subject to up to 15 years in prison. Haitham Al-Maleh was arrested on 14 October 2009 by Syrian security personnel in Damascus, and had a preliminary military court hearing on 20 October. Haitham Al-Maleh is a prominent human rights lawyer, founding member and ex-director of the Human Rights Association in Syria (HRAS).
