On 22 November 2011, the Saudi Special Criminal Court sentenced human rights defender Sheikh Suliman Ibrahim Al-Reshoudi and eight civil and political rights advocates to prison terms ranging from ten to 30 years.

On 2 October 2011, human rights defender Mr Fadel Mekki Al-Manasef was arrested and detained by the Saudi police at a police check point between the towns of Al-Awamiyya and Al-Safawi in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia.

On 27 April 2011, human rights defender and writer Mr Hussain Abdullah al Yusuf was arrested by Saudi Police. He had been arrested previously, along with fellow human rights defender Mr Hussain Abdullah al 'Alq, on the night of 3-4 March 2011 and released four days later. Hussain Abdullah al Yusuf works in promoting the rights of the Shi'a Muslim minority in Saudi Arabia and has attended peaceful demonstrations in Safwa. It is reported that he has written articles on the Shi'a news site www.rashid.com.

Further Information

On 27 April 2011 Hussain Abdullah al Yusuf was arrested while reporting to Safwa police station as required. His arrest is allegedly connected with his participation in recent peaceful demonstrations in Safwa. He was detained in the police station and later transferred to Al-Khobar prison.

Saudi Arabia: Arrest and detention of human rights defender Mr Fadel Mekki Al-Manasefposted on: 2011/05/04

On 1 May 2011 human rights defender Mr Fadel Mekki Al-Manasef was arrested when he reported to the police at the town of Awamiyyah in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia. He was transferred to Al-Khubar Prison today (4 May).Fadel Mekki Al-Manasef is a human rights activist who has been involved in raising issues with Saudi public authorities, in particular those relating to discrimination against the Shi'a community and long term Shi'a political prisoners.

Fadel Mekki Al-Manasef was arrested when he reported to the criminal investigation department at the town of Awamiyyah following a visit by the authorities to his home. He was informed that he was being arrested in connection with the recent demonstrations in the province. It is reported that his hands and his feet were shackled and he was taken away to the criminal investigation department in the town of Al-Qatif. On the previous day a team of the criminal investigation department had visited the family home of Mr Al-Manasef in the town of Al-Awamiyya to arrest him. They were told by his father that his son was not available and that he was at work.

Human rights defender Mr Mikhlif bin Dahham Al-Shommari is being detained on charges of “annoying others”. On 19 July 2010, a court in Dammam city in eastern Saudi Arabia rejected the case of human rights defender Mr Mikhlif bin Dahham Al-Shommari as being out of its jurisdiction, and returned the case to the Bureau of Investigation and Prosecution (BIP) in Dammam city.

Human rights defender Mr Mohammed Saleh El Bejadi remains in incommunicado detention in Saudi Arabia following his arrest on 21 March 2011. Mohammed Saleh El-Bejadi is a co-founder of the Saudi Civil & Political Rights Association (ACPRA), established in October 2009. He has been the subject of three previous Front Line Urgent Appeals, the most recent dated 11 May 2010.

Saudi Arabia: Harassment of human rights defenders Messrs Hussain Abdullah al Alq and Hussain Abdullah al Yusufposted on: 2011/03/09

On 8 March 2011, human rights defenders Messrs Hussain Abdullah al 'Alq and Hussain Abdullah al Yusuf were released prison after being detained for four days. They had been arrested on the night of 3-4 March 2011 in relation to Shi'a protests in the city of Qatif. This latest arrest is part of an ongoing pattern of harassment and intimidation.

Hussain Abdullah al 'Alq and Hussain Abdullah al Yusuf are writers and human rights defenders who advocate the rights of the Shi'a muslim minority in Saudi Arabia. It is reported that both human rights defenders have written articles on the Shi'a news site www.rashid.com.

Saudi Arabia: Human rights defender Munir Al-Jassas completes one year in arbitrary detention, without being charged posted on: 2010/11/17

Human rights defender Mr Munir Baqir Ebrahim Al-Jassas, (aged 30), remains in detention at the Intelligence Service Headquarters in Dammam, eastern Saudi Arabia, and as yet has not been informed about whether he has been officially charged or convicted for committing an offence.

Further Information

To date, Munir Al-Jassas has not been informed about any official charges, however, on 28 August 2010, he was asked to sign a “confession”, which was a collection of statements he had made while being interrogated.

On 1 September 2010, he was taken to the lower court in Dammam were he was asked to read the same “confession” and sign it before a religious judge. In the written “confession” Munir Al-Jassas reportedly stated that:

1. I wrote on internet forums using my real name and I am a general instructor for “Tahera” Forums;

2. I wrote a comment on the article, To his Highness the Minister on Al-Awamia website.

3. I noticed an article written by my sister, commented on it, and did not remove it;

4. I read articles by Nemr Baqr Al-Nemr (Shi'a cleric) and commented on some of them;

5. I wrote a comment on an article related to the Emir (the Prince);

Saudi Arabia: Human rights defender Fahd Bin Abdu-Rahman Al-Harbi sentenced to two months in prison and lashes in publicposted on: 2010/11/08

On 26 October 2010, a court in Qubba, in the central province of Qaseem, Saudi Arabia, sentenced human rights defender Mr Fahd Bin Abdu-Rahman Al-Harbi (known as Fahd Al Jukhaidib), to two months in prison and 50 lashes, including 25 lashes in public in front of the local electricity department.

On 28 August 2010, after eight court sessions, the Grievances (Administrative) Court in Riyadh declared itself incompetent in the case filed against the Ministry of Interior regarding the detention of Judge Suliman Ibrahim Al-Reshoudi, who has been detained incommunicado without charge for more than three years.

On 19 July 2010, a court in Dammam city in eastern Saudi Arabia rejected the case of human rights defender Mr Mikhlif bin Dahham Al-Shommari as being out of its jurisdiction, and returned the case to the Bureau of Investigation and Prosecution (BIP) in Dammam city.

Mohammed Saleh El-Bejadi is a supervisor of the website “Monitor of Human Rights in Saudi Arabia-Al-Marsad”, a co-founder of the Saudi Civil & Political Rights Association (ACPRA) established in October 2009, and was previously the host of a weekly on-line forum called “The Citizen and His Rights”, which was reportedly considered provocative by the Saudi authorities.
