Front Line is concerned following a death threat received, on 18 December 2007, by members of the Asociación Pro Derechos Humanos - APRODEH (Association for the Protection of Human Rights) and in particular Gloria Cano Legua, a human rights lawyer with APRODEH. She is currently representing victims of human rights violations committed during the presidency of Alberto Fujimori, for which he is currently on trial.
further Information
Posted 09/01/2008 On 18 December 2007, APRODEH received an anonymous call from someone who said: “Los vamos a matar porque son terroristas; a Gloria Cano, la vamos a matar porque es una basura terrorista, todos son unos hijos de puta mal nacidos…” ("We are going to kill you because you are terrorists; we are going to kill Gloria Cano because she is terrorist trash, you are all ill-bred sons of bitches")In the past, Gloria Cano Legua was victim of death threats, for instance on 20 October 2004, and APRODEH had its building defaced with threatening messages. Front Line is extremely concerned for the security of Gloria Cano Legua and the other staff members of APRODEH, and fears that these threats are an attempt to sanction the legitimate work in defence of human rights carried out by Gloria Cano Legua and other staff members of APRODEH, and may be part of an ongoing campaign against human rights defenders in Peru.
