Human rights defenders have the power to change the world, but they are in grave danger. They face harassment, intimidation, the threat of arrest and even assassination but this does not stop them in their quest for a better life for all.

“Human Rights Defenders put their vision of a civil and just world for all ahead of their own safety” Mary Lawlor, Executive Director, Front Line Defenders.

On 10th December 2010 Front Line Defenders launched a new international campaign - 10 on the 10th. focusing on 10 cases from 10 different countries - each of which highlights the many challenges and dangers faced by human rights defenders.

SUCCESS

RELEASED Jean Claude Kavumbagu was released on 16 May 2011 after the court in Bujumbura sentenced him to eight months penal servitude and a fine resulting in his release on the basis of time served.
RELEASED On 14 April 2011 Sahrawi human rights defenders Ali Salem Tamek, Brahim Dahane and Ahmad Anasiri were released The three defenders were arrested along with four others on 8 October 2009 and had been detained since that date. The defenders undertook eight hunger strikes in protest against their detention and the deprivation of their right to a fair trial.
KILLERS CONVICTED:On 23 June a military court in DRC announced the verdict in the trial of the alleged killers of human rights defender and founder of Voix Des Sans Voix, Floribert Chebeya Bahizire. Four of the accused were sentenced to death, one was sentenced to life imprisonment and three were acquitted. Despite this judgement Front Line Defenders remains concerned that while those who carried out the crime have been sentenced, the intellectual authors of the crime have not been identified or brought to justice.
